WHO IS CARLOS CHAN?
Carlos Chan, graduated in Medicine and Psychiatry from Edinburgh
University. He subsequently specialized in Social Psychiatry and Therapeutic Community work with Dr. Maxwell Jones in Scotland
at Dingleton Hospital. At the time Dingleton was chosen by the World Health Organization as the best model of mental hospital
management as a therapeutic community and it's model of social and community psychiatry. As a result of his experience there,
he obtained a post as a Consultant in Mental Health for the World Health Organization in Argentina in 1970 and was awarded
the title of Professor Honoris Causae of the University of Cordoba for his contributions to social psychiatry in 1972.
On
returning to Britain, he decided to study and specialize further in different forms of psychotherapy. He is a certified group
analyst of the Institute of Group Analysis, London. He also trained as a family therapist both at the Institute of Group Analysis
and the Tavistock Clinic. In 1974 he participated in a psychodrama therapy group for several years and underwent training
with Sue Jennings in drama therapy. In 1980 he trained for 6 years with the Institute of Bionergetic Analysis, New York, qualifying
as bioenergetic analyst. Subsequently he became the chairman of the Institute for Bionergetic Analysis in Britain.
More
recently he has become increasingly interested in non-verbal therapies and bodywork incorporating valuable contributions from
yoga, shiatzu, Tai-Chi and Qi-Gong. Combining western therapy with eastern body therapy led Carlos Chan's to develop his own
model of group therapy based on an integration of group analysis, psychodrama and bodywork based on bioenergetics, yoga, shiatzu
and Gi-Gong.
For Carlos Chan, therapy is much more than focusing on emotional problems. It is an awakening of the
senses and one's body. An increasing awareness of the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical levels of consciousness.
The capacity to form and relate to social networks and the personal discipline necessary to achieve this. He believes that
quality of life may be defined as one's capacity to experience these different levels of consciousness at the same time. He
also believes that the fruits of such a life style leads one to be in contact with the creative true self. That in turn will
lead to a growing personal vision of life and the subsequent personal mastery necessary to achieve it.

THE 3 YEAR THERAPEUTIC COURSES
These are residential 4 day courses held 4 times per year and usually held at
Marielund, Ekero. The first 4 day course is considered a "try out" where members check out the method and the feel of the
particular group they have joined. During the following weeks they have to decide whether to continue or not. Continuing implies
a gentleman's agreement to participate for the remaining 3 years. The theory is to create a safe supportive, trusting and
intimate group container so that the ongoing therapy can be carried out safely. A certificate of attendance is handed out
at the end.
My method is a unique integration of Group Analysis, Psychodrama and Bioenergetics. This method of working
respects psychoanalytic theory whilst accelerating the process of change through the use of action techniques and emotial
expression. Ideally I like to work with a group size around 16-20 members, half men, half women.
1. BASIC RULES: The
material that emerges in the groups should be respected and taken for granted as confidential. Physical violence whether self-inflicted
or acted out towards others is strongly condemned. Sexual acting out is also discouraged as more often than not it contaminates
the therapeutic work for those involved and for the group.
2. WORKING TOOLS: The working tools are verbal sharing,
family sculpting, psychodrama to enact traumatic scenes and bionenergetics to release emotionally blocked feelings in the
body armour (blocks). Every psychological defense has a parallel defense located in the body. The body is retrained to be
grounded in reality.
3. DAILY EXERCISES: Some individual, some paired enable everybody in a 4 day workshop to have
a chance their feelings and body tensions. Many of these exercises are excellent in the management of stress and psychosomatic
illness. One learns a lot of skills and techniques in bodywork that enhance the feeling of self mastery in body expression.
An awareness and confidence that come from knowing how to breath, stand and move. Bioenergetic bodywork, yoga, shiatzu, Qi-Gong
and massage all compliment each other in this process. Experiential learning is the most effective way to learn physical skills.
The final result is powerful and highly effective.
3. BYPRODUCTS of this form of group therapy is the development
of what Daniel Goleman calls Emotional Intelligence through experiential learning of basic skills in teamwork, leadership,
communication, confrontation, conflict resolution, co-operation and creativity - personal vision leading to personal mastery.
The same skills are needed to create what Peter Senge calls "The Learning Organization".

BODY AND MIND 4 DAY SUMMER COURSE HELD IN STOCKHOLM 17-20 May 2012.
The "Summer Course"
as it has become to be known is usually held at Skeppsholmens Folkhogskola, Stockholm. It is a 4 day course (9.00-18.00) and
the fees cover the course, lunch and coffee breaks. Newcomers, family members and friends of members already in therapy are
welcome to come together. Invariably the participants are a mix of "veterans" (persons who have finished their 3 year therapy)and
newcomers who are curios to experience this form of work and decide if they will join a 3 year therapy group. The focus of
the course is developing awareness of our spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical levels of consciousness and how
the mind and the body influence each other and should be seen holistically and not as separate entities. An individual sequence
of exercises is taught daily and their psychological importance and relation to child development illustrated. There is paired
work (one acting as therapist, the other as client) gives everyone a chance to participate intensely. There are also group
exercises using music and movement to explore non-verbal communication.
